The music in the club was so loud that it made the table shake. Her once idle glass of water hadn’t rested since the song had began and ever since she’d sat staring at it, watching it ripple from the middle, outward, keeping with the beat of the music. She looked away from it for a moment, to see her surroundings and noticed that every person in the club was up and dancing. Not a single body was without motion, except for her. She sat, still as stone, on a bar stool with her head resting on her right hand. Clubs just weren’t for her. She enjoyed dancing but not enough to go out on the floor and get caught in a sea of sweaty, alcohol-abusing people. She never would’ve even agreed to come if her friend hadn’t forced her, telling her that she needed to break out of her bubble and stop being so sad. At the time, she had considered giving her a snarky “fuck you” but she knew deep down that she was right and that she should try to be happy.

For months, she had this emptiness in side of her but it wasn’t the regular kind of emptiness. It wasn’t just a whole inside of her that wouldn’t go away; it was like her entire reason for existing had just vanished, like it had just left her in the night without notice. She could never put her finger on what it was that she was missing but she knew that without it, she would never truly be happy. No club, no song or melody would be able to fix that. Her entire world was empty and it would never be fixed until she found what she was looking for.

A pair of fingers snapping in her face pulled her out of her reverie and she looked up to see the bartender motioning if she wanted another drink. She shook her head and mouthed no. The previous song had stopped and another had started playing, one of those obnoxious techno songs that repeated the same phrase over and over. She rolled her eyes at the entire situation she was in. “That’s it. I’m out of here.” She said and grabbed her purse and hopped off the bar stool, quickly heading towards the door.

As she rushed to get out of the building, something caught her attention, in the corner of her eye. It was a girl in a red dress, her long brown hair draping over her shoulders like fine silk. She was sitting in a small room that was connected to the club by a mirror and men were kneeling all around her, trying to sneak a peek. At any club, the scene would seem so normal. A beautiful girl serving men with the vision of her perfect body; it was the American way but there was something different about this girl. For one, unlike most club entertainers, she was cut off from the rest of the world and for two; she had a very realistic looking set of wings stretching out of her back. She looked like an angel, locked in a cage, forced to let the world gawk at her for a certain price.

She knew she’d never seen the angel girl before and yet, as she looked at her, she felt this strange connection to her, as though she’d known her all her life. She wondered if maybe she’d seen someone like her in a dream but the sense of familiarity she felt for this girl was so much more than that. She stepped closer, examining the angel girl, desperate to know where it was that she had seen her before and then it her, like a wave crashing into the sea. Her head began to fill with images of her and the angel girl, like a movie playing out in her head. They met, they fell in love, they made love, they kissed, they danced and all of it swirled together inside of her head, going too fast for her to concentrate on a single moment. Then it stopped and the emotions came; love, fear, overwhelming sadness, all at once. Her eyes filled with tears and she knew she’d found what she was missing and she wondered why she’d never remembered it before. What had happened to her to make her forget an entire relationship?

As her mind tried to sift through all of her thoughts, the angel girl looked up at her and she realized she’d been staring. She opened her mouth to say something but the angel girl’s face stopped the words in her mouth from coming out. Her mouth was slightly open, her eyes wide and her expression sad, as though she remembered her, too. She wanted to tell the angel girl that she remembered her but she couldn’t find the words. At that moment, the angel girl put her hands on the glass as a single tear streamed down her cheek and all the men that had once been so infatuated with the angel girl turned around to look at her, instead. All eyes in the club seemed to turn on her simultaneously in such a way that it frightened her and before she knew it, her feet were taking off without her and she was running out of the club, not willing to look back.

Seems that I have been held, in some dreaming state.
A tourist in the waking world, never quite awake.
No kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber
Until I realize that it was you who held me under.

Roza.” his voice had that same wonderful lowness, the same accent…it was all just colder. “You forgot my first lessondon’t hesitate.”

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over.
